DONATE TO HELP SPREAD FINANCIAL LITERACY IN 2013

Dear Friend

Greetings. As we approach the year-end festivities, we thank you for being a part of the Moneylife Foundation family. In this mail, I would like to share our successes in 2012 and talk about our plans for 2013.

We turn three in February 2013 and by 27th December 2012 we would have completed a massive 145 workshops and seminars. This makes it the third year when we have maintained a spanking pace of just under one workshop every week. Our membership has galloped to over 18,000 members and we have also reached out to savers in Kochi, Mangalore, Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad.
As all of you know, Moneylife Foundation runs a completely transparent operation. Our donors and our events (with photographs/videos) are uploaded on our website. We are grateful to all our sponsors, partners and all of you members who have believed in us and committed to support us with no strings attached. Check the full record of our activities here

About our 2013 initiatives

India has many problems that need to be addressed for which, I am sure you will agree, there must be neutral and non-partisan voices, arguing for more sensible laws, better regulation and more accountability of savers.

Moneylife Foundation is filling this vital gap but we now your support to build on our learnings and move to another phase of activism, for which we need to strengthen our financial base. Here is what we have in mind.

a) Start clinics and counselling sessions on fixed days for savers who have specific problems in various personal finance issues like insurance, Wills & Nomination, Taxation, Credit cards and legal issues etc. This will be through computer chats and phone lines in order to ensure that expert advice and guidance is available to members anywhere in India, when they need it most.

b) Continue our efforts with the government for appropriate legislation to prevent people—from the richest to the poorest—from being looted by thousands of chain-money/Ponzi/pyramid and multi-level marketing schemes. One impact of our relentless expose of dubious schemes like City Limousine, Stockguru India, SpeakAsia & QNet, has been the setting up of an inter-ministerial group to figure out appropriate legislation and regulation of these entities. We need to keep up the pressure to ensure that this translates to actual action.

c) We also want to continue educating people on how to use to the Right to Information Act as a tool of empowerment. Our members have been very privileged to attend four workshops by none other than Shailesh Gandhi, who has the record of being the only RTI activist to become a Chief Information Commisisoner (CIC) and has set a record for the number of cases disposed during his 3-year tenure.

d) We want to be able to take up issues relating to credit scores and credit history as well as senior citizens' issues. We also want to be able to offer specific guidance on Wills & Nominations, which is an area of enormous interest for our members.

e) We have also begun work on a financial inclusion project with a difference and hope to be take it forward next year.

As you would agree, these plans require us to have a larger financial base, no matter how frugally we continue to run our operations. We need to engage people as advisors, pay for the cost of travel if needed, expand the IT infrastructure (software, hardware, toll-free number, broadband, staff, emailers) and employ more resources.

Do help us achieve our objectives for 2013 by donating to Moneylife Foundation.

You can also forward this letter to those who would appreciate what we are doing and would like to either donate or help us in any other way.

As always, we are looking for volunteers with domain expertise who are willing to commit a fixed number of hours to help and guide people through Moneylife Foundation.
