I am always , reminded of the Hindi short story MAMT A, by the great writer Jai Shankar Prasad.
This story was taught to us in School and as well as College

The story is about Mamta.

When Mamta is a young widow , her father , Churamani , a Brahmin , who was Subedar of the Rohtas Fort , takes bribe, from the invading forces , betraying his Master and his office.
When daughter Mamt a asks her father why he has done so, Churamani replies that he did this to secure her future.
To which , Mamt a replies ( my favourite line 

क्या कोई हिंदू भू-पृष्ठ पर न बचा रह जाएगा, जो ब्राह्मण को दो मुट्ठी अन्न दे सके?
